Today we began a new Language and Race/James Baldwin unit. You also got new seats.
We began by doing a close reading of the old and new mission statements of the US Citizen and Immigration Services Department. If you were absent, please read and annotate for what you find interesting, strange or revealing. Tape the statement into your notes/comp book/spiral and sum up your findings in a few sentences. Then we looked at foundational definitions of race and racism. If you were absent, please read the handout shared with you and hang onto it for reference. Finally we worked in groups on a Timeline project. You will be taking notes on the work of other groups when you return if you were absent today. HW: Finish Timelines. Either print in color or share with me to print. Also print out paragraph. Due Wednesday. Due Friday: draft of WT 1 for peer editing. Hard copy due in class. Final draft will be due to turnitin.com the following WEDNESDAY.

Today I handed out a packet with information about the Written Task 1, an IB assessment we will be working on soon. Students read the handout and then we had a Q and A to answer their questions about it. If you were absent, please read the handout, which is shared with you in Google Drive. Also read the rubric. Period 5: Today we had 5 FOAs. HW for period 5: Read the Written Task 1 packet and write down your questions. (Shared in Google Drive.) Homework for Tuesday: Read chapters 8-9 of Haroun.
Select 2 themes you see developing in the novel. Take half a page of notes as you read on these 2 themes. You should end up with a full page of notes. Have a good 3 day weekend! Today we had 3 Allusions presentations.
Then we looked at a powerpoint presentation on Censorship, and read an article by Ai Weiwei, a Chinese artist, on how censorship works. We discussed the connections we noticed between the article and the novel. If you were absent, read through the powerpoint, and read the article, looking for connections to the novel. Then, at table groups, you worked on a passage from chapter 5 or chapter 6, doing a close reading and annotation, and working on planning a mini commentary on the passage (5 minutes.) On Wednesday we will have volunteers do practice commentaries on the passages. HW: Read chapter 7 for Thursday. Today we had FOAs and a reading quiz on chapter 5. If you missed today's quiz because you are absent, you will need to take a make up quiz. Contact me to arrange a time to make it up. Your make up quiz will not be on Chapter 5, but on whatever chapter is due closest to the make up date.
HW: Read Chapter 6 for Block day. Period 4:
Today we had 4 of the Allusion presentations. We then considered what Rushdie is saying about story/stories by selecting 3 quotations from various chapters and copying them into our notes. HW: Read Chapter 5 for Friday. Period 5: Today we worked on the passages from Chapter 2. Tomorrow we will hear the last 3 groups present. Then we will move onto some of the Allusions presentations. HW: Read Chapter 5 for Friday. Today we were introduced to the novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories. We closely examined the epigraph of the novel and listened to the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. If you missed class today you should view the Google Slide presentation I will share with you and take notes. You can pick up a copy of the epigraph and a copy of the poem in class tomorrow.
Today I gave you feedback on your Gender Presentations from last Friday. Then you had the opportunity to ask questions about the FOA (I handed out FOA packets with instructions on Friday. If you were absent both Friday and today, see your Google Drive for a copy of the packet.)
You had time to work on your FOA proposal, which is due by 7 PM either by email or Google Share (10 pts.) on the day of your block class. Moving forward, you are expected to put in 30 minutes at home each night plus do focused work in class this week to finish a draft of your FOA by Friday. (As detailed as possible.) Today we watched an episode of The Simpsons called "Girls Just Want to Have Sums." You took notes on the handout for various aspects of gender you noticed in the episode. Both sides of the handout must be completed in order for you to participate in the Spider Web discussion on Block day next week.
If you were absent, you can find bits and pieces of this episode on Youtube. It's Season 17 Episode 19. Do the best you can to fill in the front of the handout based on what you can get from the internet, and complete the back side of the handout thoroughly in order to be eligible to participate in the Spider Web. Have a good weekend! |
