Today I assigned homework -- a collaborative Baldwin review document.
Look in your Google drive for 2 shared documents, one called Baldwin review document and another called Doc Groups Lund. The first document has your instructions. The second document shows you which group you are in and which text you are responsible for. The completed document needs to be done by the beginning of class on Monday/Tuesday. Also bring your Carol Ann Duffy materials, because you will have time to begin reviewing Carol Ann Duffy's poems, your notes about Duffy, and your poetry terms on Monday/Tuesday. What you missed in period 4: Discussion of Reel Bad Arabs and the article about Arabs. 3 questionable advertisements that relate to our topic of language and race internationally. Lemonade Spiderweb Discussion. To participate you must have 2 pages of notes taking and supporting a position on the Lemonade debate question.
For those of you who need to make up this discussion, please do the following: Type 500 words, double spaced, 12 pt. font arguing your position. Support your points with evidence from the visual album, from one of the other resources we used last week, or from your own research. HW: Read and annotate the article "Can the French Talk About Race"? (Shared with you in Google Drive) We began class by doing a practice IOC based on a Baldwin passage. You worked with a partner to give the IOC, score each other, and then reflect on the process.
Then we began studying Beyonce's visual album Lemonade. Use the Cultural Analysis Questions as you take notes. Handouts on Warsan Shire, who wrote the poetry Beyonce recites, and Malcolm X are in your Google Drive (Malcolm X gave a speech which Beyonce refers to in the second song on the album). I also shared the prompt for the Spiderweb Discussion on Friday and the Homework Assignment (due Wednesday) to research one aspect of the visual album and take a page of notes. I shared a document called Opening Montage...in class students took notes on each of the images in the opening montage so that we could determine what themes, motifs and tone Beyonce was establishing. HW: Mini-research assignment (see above) Today Ms. Buckner worked with you so you could complete your High School and Beyond Plan.
HW: Outline a commentary on your assigned passage using the assigned strategy: linear or conceptual. Bring your outline to class on Block day after break. If you were absent, see below for which passage to use and which strategy to use. Passages will be available in your Google Drive. Today you received your final James Baldwin essay, "If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?"
You read and annotated the essay. Then, in small groups, you worked on identifying key features of a couple of paragraphs, as well as identifying central ideas or arguments. Each group then presented its findings to the class. If you were absent, there is a copy of the essay for you in your Google Drive. You can learn about the context of the essay by reading this article from the New York Times: Tomorrow Ms. Buckner will be here to help you work on your high school and beyond plans. Today I introduced Baldwin's essay "Smaller Than Life." You had time to annotate it and then we discussed it. If you were absent, look for a copy of the essay in your Google Drive.
HW: WT 2 is due by 11:59 PM tonight to turnitin.com Today we are watching the documentary "I Am Not Your Negro". If you are absent and want to have the same information as your classmates going into the IOC, this documentary is available for streaming through Kanopy using your KCLS public library card number. Students will take notes on the documentary using the document shared through Google Drive.
HW: Due Wednesday, Written Task 2 to turnitin.com and a hard copy to class (print ahead of time.) What you missed today:
1) We spent 50 minutes working on the practice Written Task 2, which is due next Monday/Tuesday. 2) You received your third James Baldwin essay and began reading and making your two column or two color notes. Yesterday we discussed the powerpoint "Images Shape Beliefs." We also looked at presidential portraits from the past as well as the most recent presidential portrait, that of Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley.
I shared the powerpoint with you in your Google Drive. It's labeled "Douglass Truth." You should read through it if you missed class on Thursday. We will be writing a practice Written Task 2, which will be based on an image from the powerpoint. Today in class I will assign the practice Written Task 2. You will receive a packet with information about the Written Task. If you are absent, I will share the packet with you in Google Drive. I will also share a powerpoint labeled "Text 2 images" which includes the images you are allowed to write about in your task. In addition I am sharing an example of a WT 2 Outline and task. Note that this example is probabaly a "C" essay, but the outline format is good and you should copy it. You will have time in class today to begin work on your task. You will also have 50 minutes of work time on Monday/Tuesday. The task should be completed and uploaded to turnitin by Friday March 30. |
