Today was the Think Aloud for the poem "Wintering."
I also showed you a video of an IOC so you could get an idea of what doing an IOC will be like, and we discussed how to organize a commentary. HW: Read and annotate "Luke Howard Namer of Clouds." Today we had a Think Aloud for the poem "War Photographer."
How to write a Dominant Effect: What is the primary intellectual effect of the poem? (What is it REALLY about?) What is the primary emotional effect of the poem? (How does it make you feel, or how should it make you feel?) Put those together to create your dominant effect. Also think about which techniques and which of the poet's choices are most important in creating this effect HW: Read and annotate "The Falling Soldier". Also write a dominant effect for "War Photographer." Your essay will be due on BLOCK day, hard copy plus submitted to turnitin.com. Remember that you will also have poems to read and annotate for BLOCK day. Then I introduced the Carol Ann Duffy Poetry Think Aloud project. You chose poems to work on. HW: The "War Photographer" Think Aloud is on Thursday. Everyone should have read and annotated the poem by then. Your final draft of your essay is due, hard copy and to turnitin.com, on Friday. Today we talked about how to determine dominant effects of poems. If you were absent, you will need to get the notes on this from a friend.
Then we practiced in groups determining the dominant effect of the poem "Valentine." After that we did an Open-Mic talk-through of the poem "Mean Time." We'll finish talking through that poem on Monday/Tuesday. A very good draft of your Inductive Essay is due Monday/Tuesday for peer editing. Please do NOT title it "Inductive Essay"! Bring a hard copy of your essay to class. |
