We discussed the images from Girls Life and Boys Life in light of the Implicit Bias article.
I assigned an article from the New York Times on single mothers, and the response from Slate. You were to annotate both articles. I used the powerpoint which is now in Student Vue to talk about the College Essay and assigned a college essay. Look in your Student Vue for a copy of the assignment. I also went over the article giving you tips on the College Essay. HW: Read and annotate Single Mothers article (implicit bias) and Slate response Wednesday I checked your second text type.
I provided you with a mystery text type (an opinion column) which you then annotated with an eye to analysis of the "Big 5" aspects. See Documents page to print out. We talked about whether bias is always bad, analyzed the structure of the opinion piece and the rhetorical devices she's using, and talked about the New York Times as a news source. On Thursday we finished up this discussion and read the article "Tips for Writing an Op-Ed piece," which might come in handy for completing a Written Task 1. Then we read and discussed the article "Defining Implicit Bias." Last but not least, you were asked to tape the two images into your comp book or spiral and "Notice what you notice," annotating the images. Then, you were asked to answer the question: So what? Write a fully developed paragraph in your comp book/spiral discussing the 3 texts (the 2 sets of images and the "Defining Bias" article) in light of what you noticed. First, read this article from The Atlantic:
Time Magazine is Hiding a Lot of Stuff From a Lot of Countries, Apparently Now, with your group, go to Newseum's Today's Front Pages. Choose a variety of front pages to look at following the instructions on your handout. Record the details in your chart, paying attention to the terms in your notes on newsworthiness and determining some of the news values that seem to be important in relation to the choices made by the newspaper. HW: Text Type # 2 plus analysis. This needs to be a different text type than you brought in last time. Remember to use specific details from the text as examples in your analysis. Create a T-chart in your comp book or spiral. Label one "Slate" and one "The Hill." Read the following two news stories about what's going on with DACA in Washington DC. Keep your eyes open for language indicating bias, especially connotations of words. Jot down what you notice on one side or other of the T chart.
Perplexed Republicans reduced to tweeting at Trump Right explodes in anger over Trump immigration push When you finish, write a focused detailed paragraph using quoted evidence as support. Use at least 3 of the terms from your "Key Terms" handout. Period 1:
Today I showed an excerpt of the documentary "Managing Consent" so you could see Noam Chomsky explaining his own ideas. Working in a group, you defined the term "bias" in relation to the news media. We finished discussing the reading from "Language and the Media". Then we did an activity in which you identified biased language in headlines. HW: Find 2 news stories from competing sources. Annotate, looking for examples of biased language (particularly connotations) in both. Tape into comp book or spiral Period 2: Working in a group, you defined the term "bias" in relation to the news media. Today we finished working through the IB Learner Profile, modeling the type of analysis you need to be doing in your Text Type Collection.
Your first text type is due Wednesday. Then you wrote a letter to your June self considering your goals for the year and your strengths and areas for growth in the Learner Profile. You received a list of Key terms to learn during the first unit, Bias in the Media, and a reading from chapter 4 of Language and Power. Please go to the Documents page and print out page 71, which didn't get copied properly. Read for Wednesday. Thanks! |
