Today I went through the Power Point called Paper 1 Practice (shared in Google Drive.)
I also went over the Comparative Essay Formats handout and the Paper 1 Rubric. If you were absent you should read over all these items. Students will be allowed to use all of these items on the paper 1 exam tomorrow.

Today we worked on the Graphic Novel jigsaw, discussing these novels with the mindset that they are a type of political speech.
Tomorrow I will teach you how to do a Paper 1 exam. Friday and Monday will be spent taking the Paper 1 exam. If you miss class Friday or Monday you will need to attend the test make up on Wednesday after school next week to finish the exam. Today your WT 1/2 draft was due to turnitin.com. This is the draft I will comment on.
We continued looking at language and politics by reading and annotating two political documents from WW 2 with a close look at the language of the documents. (Shared in Google Drive: Executive Order 9066 and Civilian Exclusion Order No. 1). Then we did an exercise in connotations of words looking at pairs of words, one of each pair used by the government and the other used by those who experienced Japanese internment. Lastly we began a graphic novel jigsaw. Each person was assigned a chapter from the graphic novel Fighting for America and asked to look closely at language and images as well as read the story. Tomorrow you will meet in jigsaw groups to teach each other what you learned. Today you discussed the use of rhetorical devices in Michelle Obama's speech using appointment discussions.
If you were absent you can make this up by typing up 500 words, double spaced, properly paragraphed, in which you analyze the rhetorical devices in Mrs. Obama's speech. Tape this into your comp book. HW: WT 1/2 due to turnitin.com by 11:59 PM on Block Day. Draft 2!! Happy Thanksgiving! Today you peer edited your written tasks one and two.
I handed out a sample WT 1, scored, and a sample WT 2, scored for you to look at as well. Your revised WT is due Monday Nov. 27 to turnitin.com, and that is the draft I will edit. Then you read Chapter 3 up through 3.5.5. I asked you to highlight key terms as you read, then copy these terms and definitions into your notes. Finally I gave you a speech by Michelle Obama. The instructions are at the top of the speech. I asked you to read it, annotate it thoroughly, identify and label the rhetorical techniques she is using in the speech, then write a healthy paragraph analyzing her use of one of the techniques. This is due Wednesday. Today we worked in same speech and then mixed speech groups to discuss the inaugural speeches.
Homework: Find a link to a speech by a current world leader from another country (see bottom of inaugural speech assignment) or a transcript of the speech. You will be using the link or transcript tomorrow in class. Today we finished the lesson we started on Thursday related to the language presidents use to talk about terror. If you were absent today, please see the lesson handout in your Google Drive and the Google Slides presentation. Complete the lesson on your own, writing your answers to the questions in your comp book.
Then we began a lesson on Language in Politics focusing on presidential inauguration speeches. If you were absent today, please use the link on the handout I shared with you to read Donald Trump's inauguration speech. Answer the questions on the handout about the speech, either in a Google Doc or in your comp book. Then listen to/watch the speech and answer the questions related to that. You can show me this work on Wednesday. You will also need the "Techniques of Persuasive Rhetoric" handout. All handouts will be shared in your Google Drive. Today you got new seats.
We started our last area of study in Part 2 , of the course, Language and Politics, by discussing the differences and similarities between the words "loser," "warrior," and "murderer." Then you went to the Career Center to complete your High School and Beyond Plans. Period 1 turned in their WT 1/2 Proposals. Period 2, your proposals are due tomorrow. Today I handed back your News Text Analysis Essay and went over them with you. You set goals based on the feedback (written in your comp. book.) I will share the feedback power point with all of you. If you were absent, you will need to write a reflection after you get your essay back. This will be part of the work I'll be checking in your comp book/spiral in the near future.
Then I handed out packets for WT 1 and WT 2. You will be writing a WT 1 or WT 2 based on what we have been studying this fall, bias in the media and the use of persuasion in the media and advertising. Due on Wednesday is your WT 1 or 2 proposal. Thursday you will have class time to work on the first draft of your WT 1 or 2. The draft will be due in class for peer editing and to turnitin.com on Mon/Tues Nov. 13/14. There will be no text type due this Wednesday. Cheers! |
