Today we finished up the lesson on "Counter Advertising." If you were absent you should view and do the activities on the GoogleSlides presentation shared in your Google Drive from "Parody & Pastiche" to the end of the presentation.
We began a project today which you will be working on today and tomorrow in class, designing your own ad. I'm sharing the handout with you in your Google Drive. The ads will most likely be due next Thursday, but you will have today and tomorrow in class to work on them. Take this survey regarding the Written Tasks you completed last year.
https://goo.gl/forms/1u0wzxzijZaAoGYh1 Today we deconstructed an ad together, using the "Analyzing Ads" packet.
Then you deconstructed your own ad, taking notes in your comp book. Then you discussed your ads in groups. With period 2 we also began to learn about Counter Advertisements. If you were absent, I am sharing the Google Slides presentation with you. We worked our way up through the section on Culture Jamming, so you should do that part on your own. HW: Text Type 5 plus analysis due Wednesday. Consider using an ad for your text to get more practice! Today I assigned a Jigsaw. Homework is to read and annotate an excerpt from either Hidden Persuaders or Brandwashed. Also read and annotate the half sheet explaining the book your excerpt comes from. Tomorrow you will meet in your same text group to solidify your understanding of the text. Then you will teach your text to students who read the other text.
To focus on: What is the author saying about persuasive techniques in advertising? What specific examples of how language (broadly defined) is used in advertising did you find? How is context (1957 vs 2011) important? What did you find interesting, strange or revealing? You need to prepare to teach your text to students who had the other text. Also give them information ABOUT your text (from the half sheet). I checked your text type 4. We began to pitch ads! HW: Read and annotate. (See above!) We watched a 15 minute clip of Anderson Cooper from 60 Minutes (a segment called "Brain Hacking,") on youtube and you took notes.
Then you had a small group Spider Web discussion on both the Digital Media article and the video, focusing on the questions on the yellow half sheet. You graded yourselves, using the Spiderweb rubric. In the second half of class, we did an "intro to advertising." We talked about logos and how even pre-literate children can read these, and how advertising is pervasive in our lives. Then we watched ad pitches on an Australian program, The Gruen Transfer. After that you worked in groups of 4 to design an ad based on 4 cards you drew, product, audience, medium, plus an image you had to use. You had a few minutes to plan your pitch. You will finish planning your pitch and pitch your ads tomorrow! HW: Text Type #4 plus analysis due tomorrow! Today we discussed the results of your attempt to play the Factitious game.
Then I assigned a reading called "Our Minds can be Hijacked," which serves as a consideration of the language of digital media and a segue into the persuasive power of language in advertising (our next topic.) Read and annotate the article as your ticket to the discussion on Monday. Follow the directions on the handout that begins "Read and annotate this article from The Guardian." Your "News Analysis Essay" is due Monday. Please give the essay a creative title.
